Robert Fulton's version
Fulton's design was patented in France in 1798, based on earlier work done by Bushnell.
The 168 boat was a big submarine. It was used in WWII for shooting torpedoes at surface ships, rescuing downed aviators and because of its size, transporting raiders to enemy shores.
With the loss of many of our major fighting ships during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, submarines like NAUTILUS played a much larger role than had originally been planned. This expanded role came at a horrendous cost. The submarine service had a 22% casualty rate during WWII. Fifty two of our submarines and 3500 personel lost their lives between December, 1941 and August, 1945.
The 50s Atomic model
The 571 boat changed forever the way surface ships and submarines would fight a war. How does a surface ship fight an enemy as fast or faster than its self, but never runs out of fuel and is not affected by storms or the condition of the sea?
