We surface at the west edge of the Arctic icepack for a final check before we dive under in our final attempt to cross under the North pole. There is in excess of a thousand miles of ice between us and our next chance to surface. Let's hope the untried Inertial Navigation System works; it's our only chance of coming out at the right place.
As we surface for this last look we notice a piece of ice on the deck of NAUTILUS; so we pick it up and store it in the refrigerator as a gift for Admiral Rickover after our return. As you can see in the photograph below, he really enjoyed it!
