Here we are heading into New York City. It's great to be home!

Admiral Rickover boards Nautilus as we enter the harbor and rides with us into port. Here is the cartoon a New York paper made to celebrate our return

When we dock in New York it is a round of parties and celebrations. The Navy contacts our wives in New London, Connecticut and transports them by bus to New York City, where they are put up in individual hotel rooms and transported down town to see our ticker tape parade from the observation deck up on the Singer Building.

Imagine being in a ticker tape parade! Four of us are put into a Jeep and 25 plus of these Jeeps are paraded slowly down Broadway. Later on we were told that it is one of the biggest parades ever recorded until a few years later when John Glenn went driving around outer space in that little capsule of his and got a bigger parade than we did.

Since then the Olympians have gotten a bigger parade along with returning Vietnam Vets, and all sorts of other people. I think we are number 563 on the big parade list now. It's hard to stay a hero for 40 plus years!

Here is a photograph that appeared in newspapers all over the world
