We left Seattle, Washington just after midnight June 9, 1958 for our first attempt to cross from the Pacific to the Atlantic via the North pole.

While we were berthed in Seattle we invited a bunch of the kids from the Washington Children's Home Society to come aboard Nautilus for some ice cream and a cook's tour of the boat. I wrote a letter to the kids while we were making the North Pole transit telling them that Santa Claus had come aboard through one of the torpedo tubes inquiring about their behavior back there in Seattle.

I received this letter from the resident supervisor of the "Home" shortly after our return to the New London Submarine Base.
